Further Background Information
Hilary Anderson started her professional education at the University of
Pretoria, completing a BCom in mathematical statistics (also majoring
in economics) and then continuing to integrate economics and statistics
with a BCom Honours in econometrics, which she obtained with distinction.
At that time she had already become interested in applying econometrics
to environmental issues, and accordingly also included a course in environmental
economics and policy analysis (in addition to her required Honours courses).
Subsequently, she started work as an Environmental Economist/Econometrician
at the CSIR, Environmentek in South Africa. While working, she completed
a master's degree in environmental management with applied econometrics
(dissertation entitled "An Econometric Analysis of the Wildlife Market
in South Africa"), through the University of Cape Town. She simultaneously
undertook her Advanced Diploma in Project Management (through Cranefield
College) thus further developing her integrative perspective. During this
time, she attended numerous work-related courses, workshops and conferences.
She presented papers at the World Congress of Environmental and Resource
Economics in Monterey Bay, California, and at the 7th Annual Conference
on Econometric Modelling for Africa, in the Kruger National Park in South
Africa. She also contributed at Resource Accounting workshops for Africa,
with distinguished international professors, including Professor Karl-Goran
Maler and Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta.
Through her experience in both environmental and business
contexts, she has gained an integrative, interdisciplinary perspective
on applications within and across these contexts. Her mainstream corporate
experience includes working as a Senior Analyst at Peppers & Rogers
(in the UK), the HSBC banking group, and BSkyB. In that capacity, her focus
was on marketing and business analysis, and predictive modelling. She currently
continues her activities in statistical analysis, resource economics and
environmental econometrics through Multiplin.
For leisure she enjoys ballroom dancing, snowboarding, skiing, triathlons
(which have included the London triathlon), wildlife viewing, hiking and birding,
snorkelling and scuba diving. She also enjoys travelling, which has so
far taken her to every continent except Antarctica.
